River Clean Up ~~~

American Whitewater partners with Riverlink and the Nantahala Outdoor Center for a river cleanup on the French Broad River.
Each May lovers of rivers and music gather on the banks of the French Broad River to celebrate the mountain lifestyle at the French Broad River Festival. The festival gives back to the community by raising funds for the river stewardship work of American Whitewater and various local charities. At the 2009 French Broad Festival American Whitewater is partnering with Riverlink, an organization dedicated to protecting and restoring the French Broad River, to encourage river stewardship in paddlers by organizing a river cleanup on the French Broad River.
The river cleanup will be hosted by the Nantahala Outdoor Center on Friday, May 1, 2009. Anyone interested in participating in the cleanup should email info@americanwhitewater.org prior to April 24, 2009 so that lunch and shuttle arrangements can be prepared.
Participants in the cleanup will be meeting at NOC’s French Broad outpost on Friday, May 1st, at 10:00. NOC will be providing a free shuttle service and lunch for those participating in the cleanup. The cleanup is open to the public, boaters should be comfortable in Class III-IV whitewater. Paddlers with their own equipment and rafters are encouraged to participate. A shuttle is available to transport boats to and from cleanup location. For more information on this section of river check out the French Broad Section 9 page on the American Whitewater website. Minimum age for participation in the cleanup is 8 years old, wavers will need to be signed by all participants and anyone under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
The world's third oldest river, the French Broad flows through scenic Pisgah National Forest in the mountains of North Carolina. This free-flowing river has moderate Class II and III rapids. Due to its close proximity to Asheville the French Broad River receives a lot of use. The river cleanup will provide paddlers with an opportunity to improve the quality of the river while enjoying all it has to offer. The river cleanup should last several hours and a small reception will be hosted at NOC for the participants at 4:00 as the event wraps up.

REVEREND HORTON HEAT
It’s been an almost 20-year journey for Heath, whose country-flavored punkabilly and onstage antics have brought him and his band a strikingly diverse fan base and a devoted cult following, not to mention the respect of fellow musicians worldwide. Revival, the band’s first release for Yep Roc Records, is a return to Heath’s roots - musical and geographical.

ACOUSTIC SYNDICATE
Acoustic Syndicate is a rock/folk/bluegrass band from North Carolina formed in 1992. They have toured nationally in the US, including appearances at Farm Aid and the Bonnaroo festival. Their sound is characterized by three-part vocal harmony and complex polyrhythmic banjo playing. Lyrically, the group often discusses themes relating to subsistence, sustainability and quality of life.
The McMurry family comes from a small family farm in Cleveland County, North Carolina, near Shelby, North Carolina. They have been farming the same region that their ancestors settled over 200 years ago. Acoustic Syndicate also has roots in Asheville, NC, where Jay Sanders is an active member of the local music scene.

LARRY KEEL & NATURAL BRIDGE
Batten down the hatches or prepare to be blown away in the perfect storm, a raging musical maelstrom of swirling innovations. The extended forecast is calling for tonal tornadoes of epic proportions made more dangerous by syncopated sound cyclones scattered with bursts of colossal chord changes and intermittent harmonies. For those in the direct path of this vast vortex of energy, expect to be further battered by sonic tsunamis fed by raging rhythms. Keel advisories will remain in effect until after the second set.

THE SNAKE OIL MEDICINE SHOW
The Snake Oil Medicine show is an Ecclectic and fun mix of bluegrass, Jazz, reggae, and dance grooves from all over the world. They sing songs of awareness presented in beautiful three part harmony. Being based in the NC mountains gives their music a hillbilly undertone, but travels to Europe and Jamaica have greatly influenced their music. National touring has shaped this band into a musical force. Not only does this band have virtuoso power, but they have a full Art Gallery on stage and a Painter to create colorful characters on canvas while they run the musical gamut with ease. Having recorded 6 international releases, The Snake Oil Medicine Show is proud to showcase their newest CD which was recorded at Atlanta's World Class Tree Sound Studios by grammy winning engineer Robert Hannon. They have also recorded two DVD projects including a sound track for a children's cartoon. They have shared the stage with others like Bruce Hornsby, Bela Fleck, Guy Clark, Vassar Clements, John Hartford, Yonder Mountain String Band, Sound Tribe Sector Nine, Larry Keel, Leftover Salmon, Michelle Shocked, David Grisman, and many, many more.

SOL DRIVEN TRAIN
Sol Driven Train is a 5-headed musical monster emerging from the swampy South Carolina Lowcountry.Generally seen at night in clubs and bars around the Carolinas, it can be identified by its distinctive call: a blend of fiery world-beat, southern funk, and melodious rock. Listeners Beware!! Several researchers attempting to study the Train have succumbed to its hypnotic call and found themselves twitching and gesticulating uncontrollably on the dance floor. Reports of punchy horns, three part vocal harmonies, and a slamming rhythm section are common.Though phylogeny is still unclear at this time, some have suggested evolutionary descent from groups such as The Allman Brothers, The Band, Carlos Santana, Stevie Wonder, and Bob Marley and the Wailers.

JOSH PHILLIPS FOLK FESTIVAL
Josh Phillips began writing music when he received a Tascam 8 track recorder as a high school graduation gift. Because of this gift he learned more than just practicing scales on his guitar. Instead he learned the importance of layering simple parts to let music do its own thing. Though writing music, Josh never joined a band in seriousness until he met Yo Mama's Big Fat Booty Band in 2002. Joining the band as a percussionist, Josh soon started playing guitar as well and quickly became one of the band's main song writers. He's been playing and touring heavily for the last 4 years with Yo Mama's Big Fat Booty Band. And while their sound and energy on stage is unmatched, Josh recently began a solo career as well to get back to his roots and harness a more simple sound that highlights a song and it's lyrics. Josh is in the studio now recording his first album album with a collective of local Asheville musicians known as the Folk Festival. And also with appearances by the Asheville Horns, Toubab Krewe's Justin Perkins, Acoustic Syndicate's Bryan McMurry, Andy John, Andrew Wakefield, and Woody Wood.

As a local favorite on the Asheville music scene, the band is ready to take their sound out on the road for everyone to hear. The Juice sings songs that excite memories from long ago, while brining back softly familiar moments from just minutes passed. Jen & the Juice is a vibrant expression of this home squeezed blend of Appalachian Bohemian Americana.
