River Clean Up ~~~
Each May lovers of rivers and music gather on the banks of the French Broad River to celebrate the mountain lifestyle at the French Broad River Festival. The festival gives back to the community by raising funds for the river stewardship work of American Whitewater and various local charities. At the 2008 French Broad Festival American Whitewater is partnering with Riverlink, an organization dedicated to protecting and restoring the French Broad River, to encourage river stewardship in paddlers by organizing a river cleanup on the French Broad River.
The river cleanup will be hosted by the Nantahala Outdoor Center, national partner of American Whitewater on Friday, May 2, 2008. Anyone interested in participating in the cleanup should email Ben VanCamp (ben@americanwhitewater.org) prior to April 29, 2008 so that lunch and shuttle arrangements can be prepared.
Participants in the cleanup will be meeting at NOC’s French Broad outpost (www.noc.com/Rafting/FrenchBroad/Directions) on Friday morning at 9:00. NOC will be providing free shuttle service and lunch for those attending the river cleanup. Paddlers should bring their own paddling equipment including boats and should be comfortable paddling Class III – IV whitewater. For more information on the section of the river check out the French Broad Section 9 page on the American Whitewater website. (www.americanwhitewater.org/content/River_detail_id_1074_)
The world's third oldest river, the French Broad flows through scenic Pisgah National Forest in the mountains of North Carolina. This free-flowing river is ideal for families and young teens, with moderate Class II and III rapids. Due to its close proximity to Asheville and its suburbs the French Broad River receives a lot of use and abuse. The river cleanup will provide paddlers with an opportunity to improve the quality of the river while enjoy all it has to offer. The river cleanup should last several hours and a small reception will be hosted at NOC for the participants in the afternoon |

ACOUSTIC SYNDICATE
Acoustic Syndicate is a rock/folk/bluegrass band from North Carolina formed in 1992. They have toured nationally in the US, including appearances at Farm Aid and the Bonnaroo festival. Their sound is characterized by three-part vocal harmony and complex polyrhythmic banjo playing. Lyrically, the group often discusses themes relating to subsistence, sustainability and quality of life.
The McMurry family comes from a small family farm in Cleveland County, North Carolina, near Shelby, North Carolina. They have been farming the same region that their ancestors settled over 200 years ago.Acoustic Syndicate also has roots in Asheville, NC, where Jay Sanders is an active member of the local music scene.

LARRY KEEL & NATURAL BRIDGE
Batten down the hatches or prepare to be blown away in the perfect storm, a raging musical maelstrom of swirling innovations. The extended forecast is calling for tonal tornadoes of epic proportions made more dangerous by syncopated sound cyclones scattered with bursts of colossal chord changes and intermittent harmonies. For those in the direct path of this vast vortex of energy, expect to be further battered by sonic tsunamis fed by raging rhythms. Keel advisories will remain in effect until after the second set.

BLUEGROUND UNDERGRASS
Formed originally in 1998 by Jeff Mosier, Blueground Undergrass has developed a solid reputation and nationwide following by playing its multi-faceted music mix coast-to-coast. The band has always been known for exciting performances and eclectic arrangements. Its sonic wall of twang type sound pleases the whole spectrum of fans from hippies to cloggers to rockers, taking Blueground Undergrass to the brink of almost moshpit energy, yet guiding each show with song-driven clarity along the way.
A veteran of the jam band scene, Jeff Mosier has consistently remained on the cutting edge of experimental music. He was a founding member of Col. Bruce Hampton's original Aquarium Rescue Unit, and over the years, has performed on stage with Widespread Panic, The Allman Brothers Band, Leftover Salmon and Phish. In 2002, he played banjo on Leftover Salmon's first tour after the tragic loss of banjoist Mark Vann. Mosier toured with Phish in 1994, prompting The Phish Companion to state: Perhaps no guest artist has had as great an influence on the band's history as the Reverend Jeff Mosier.
David Blackmon's world-class fiddle playing has also been recognized by a number of notable bands, including Widespread Panic, who utilized his talents on the groups Space Wrangler and Aint Life Grand albums.

THE SNAKE OIL MEDICINE SHOW
"The Snake Oil Medicine show is an Ecclectic and fun mix of bluegrass, Jazz, reggae, and dance grooves from all over the world. They sing songs of awareness presented in beautiful three part harmony. Being based in the NC mountains gives their music a hillbilly undertone, but travels to Europe and Jamaica have greatly influenced their music. National touring has shaped this band into a musical force. Not only does this band have virtuoso power, but they have a full Art Gallery on stage and a Painter to create colorful characters on canvas while they run the musical gamut with ease. Having recorded 6 international releases, The Snake Oil Medicine Show is proud to showcase their newest CD which was recorded at Atlanta's World Class Tree Sound Studios by grammy winning engineer Robert Hannon. SOL DRIVEN TRAIN
Sol Driven Train is a 5-headed musical monster emerging from the swampy South Carolina Lowcountry.Generally seen at night in clubs and bars around the Carolinas, it can be identified by its distinctive call: a blend of fiery world-beat, southern funk, and melodious rock. Listeners Beware!! Several researchers attempting to study the Train have succumb to its hypnotic call and found themselves twitching and gesticulating uncontrollably on the dance floor. Reports of punchy horns, three part vocal harmonies, and a slamming rhythm section are common.Though phylogeny is still unclear at this time, some have suggested evolutionary descent from groups such as The Allman Brothers, The Band, Carlos Santana, Stevie Wonder, and Bob Marley and the Wailers.

STRUT
Strut has been wowing crowds for the past several years with their always-evolving style and unique blend of Ska, Rock and Funk. In 2005 the band toured non- stop, playing nearly 130 shows promoting their sound from cross-country tours to the Virgin Islands and three amazing sets at last year's Bonnaroo Festival. The New Year has already showed much promise as well. Strut is releasing the new album at the end of January and have already had music played on MTV's reality series "Meet the Barkers" with more of the new album to be featured on the show throughout the season.
Though they've been in the mountains of Asheville, NC since 1999, the group's cohesiveness began long ago. The members of Strut can thank their airtight sound and musicianship on knowing each other since they were toddlers. The whole band grew up playing together on the famous commune turned intentional community, The Farm (check out thefarmcommunity.com) in Summertown, TN. Growing up at a place such as The Farm set the stage for a wide variety of musical genres they were exposed to. So depending on the night and the crowd, Strut will dip in to their bag of rhythm and pull out whatever feels right for the moment. The Strut sound has been categorized in everything from Funk, to Jam-band, to Ska-Punk. But thanks to their many years together, Strut has merged into an intuitive, super-tight machine wherein no one sound dominates, though one objective does...everyone in the room is moving!

JOSH PHILLIPS FOLK FESTIVAL
Josh Phillips began writing music when he received a Tascam 8 track recorder as a high school graduation gift. Because of this gift he learned more than just practicing scales on his guitar. Instead he learned the importance of layering simple parts to let music do its own thing. Though writing music, Josh never joined a band in seriousness until he met Yo Mama's Big Fat Booty Band in 2002. Joining the band as a percussionist, Josh soon started playing guitar as well and quickly became one of the band's main song writers. He's been playing and touring heavily for the last 4 years with Yo Mama's Big Fat Booty Band. And while their sound and energy on stage is unmatched, Josh recently began a solo career as well to get back to his roots and harness a more simple sound that highlights a song and it's lyrics. Josh is in the studio now recording his first album album with a collective of local Asheville musicians known as the Folk Festival. And also with appearances by the Asheville Horns, Toubab Krewe's Justin Perkins, Acoustic Syndicate's Bryan McMurry, Andy John, Andrew Wakefield, and Woody Wood.
